samsung galaxy S4 google play edition review

Introduction

We've got something special at HQ today. The perfect Nexus phone has arrived and it looks like a Galaxy S4. This shameless poser embodies everything worth admiring from both worlds - timely updates, the unblemished stock Android experience, the highest-grade hardware money can buy and expandable storage. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition makes the LG-made Google Nexus 4 look like it should be in the minor league.
With one swift blow Samsung managed to create a mouth-watering Nexus smartphone, featuring some really hot hardware coupled with the latest software bundle.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition
But it makes you wonder, why did the South Koreans bother? With over 10 million Galaxy S4s shipped already, it's unlikely that the Google Play Edition S4 will make an impact, especially when you consider the high price tag and limited availability (USA-only, no subsidies). Was the idea to make good with Google or developers? Or was it just a blatant demonstration of power.
In any case we're happy to just let this one slide and enjoy the fruits of the holy Samsung-Google alliance, which has brought a FullHD Super AMOLED and expandable storage to the sanctity of stock Android.
Check out what else you get from the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition.

SIM-free Samsung Galaxy S4 Active hits the UK, costs £486

The SIM-free version of the water and dust proof Samsung Galaxy S4 Active has just gone on sale in the United Kingdom. The tough smartphone has been available through a few carriers for a few weeks now, but it's only now that you can get it without signing a contract.
The lowest price for the SIM-free and unlocked Galaxy S4 Active we were able to find is £486 via Clove. Other retailers are offering it at about £500, Carphone Warehouse is seeking £530 while Amazon UK is currently taking pre-orders at £676.
Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is a water and dust proof version of the Galaxy S4 flagship with a few downgraded features - an 8MP camera instead of 13MP and a standard LCD screen instead of a Super AMOLED unit.

Samsung Galaxy Note III to be available in four versions

Samsung Galaxy Note III is one of the most anticipated devices of the year so understandably it's getting its fair share of leaks and rumors. Now a particularly interesting report from the Korean publication ET News claims that the third-generation Galaxy Note phablet will be available in four different variants.

The Samsung Galaxy Note III is speculated to be available in a limited premium edition with an unbreakable AMOLED display, 13 megapixel camera along with few exclusive features.
The second variant of the upcoming Galaxy Note III phablet will have a plastic body with a regular AMOLED display and a 13 megapixel camera, which is more likely to be the international version.
The third option of the Galaxy Note III is rumored to come out with a plastic body and an LCD display along with a 13 megapixel camera. It is predicted that the LCD screen will allow the South Korean manufacturer to offer their latest phablet with an attractive price tag.
Lastly, the fourth model of the Note III is said to feature a plastic body along with an LCD display. This variant will sport an 8 megapixel shooter at the back and is expected to be available at the lowest price point.
Meanwhile, the User-Agents of two Samsung Galaxy Note III model have been leaked. The UA profile reveals that the Galaxy Note III will use an ARM 11 CPU, but that's probably an error of some sort. At this point it's all but certain that the Note III will have either a Snapdragon 800 chipset with Krait CPU or an Exynos 5 with Cortex-A15 processor.
Unfortunately, there is no official word or any confirmation on the existence of these models. We guess we'll have to wait until Samsung unveils its third-generation Galaxy Note phablet on September 4, two days before IFA 2013 kicks off.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 review: Third time's the charm

Introduction

The Samsung Galaxy Tab family was introduced back in 2011, to at least get a foot in the door swung open by the rising Apple iPad. The Tabs came in a variety of sizes and connectivity options with displays ranging from 7 inches all the way to the massive 10.1 inches, and more combos of screen resolution and processor specs than you can shake a stick at.
Just by comparing Samsung's and Apple's lineup, you can see two very different strategies at play - while Apple relies on the exclusivity of their devices and content to garner interest in their products, Samsung instead hopes to cater to every possible market segment under the sun - and has been immensely successful in the process.
It is exactly tablets though, where Samsung have been struggling to match the kind of impact they've had in phones. The latest Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 is in a way affected by the shifts in Samsung's tablet strategy. In an ideal world, the Galaxy 3 10.1 would've been the Koreans' flagship slate. But that position is already filled by the Note 10.1, with a successor possibly in the pipeline.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 official photos
So, the Galaxy Tab hasn't got top of the line specs and comes across as a routine upgrade, whose single clear-cut advantage is the latest software version available. The latest Android build, 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, comes with arguably the most feature-rich custom UI from Samsung - TouchWiz 5.0. But how does it stack up to the likes of the iPad 4, or a handful of emerging Android tablets? Let's take a look at the key features at a glance:

Key features

Galaxy Note III to be unveiled on September 4 with 5.7" display

The next generation Galaxy Note phablet from Samsung is one of the most anticipated devices of the year, so understandably rumors about it aren't hard to come by. According to latest report the Galaxy Note III will be announced two days before IFA 2013 kicks off - on September 4.

The report also says Samsung Galaxy Note III is said to sport a 5.7" Super AMOLED display, rather than the 6" unit that was most frequently mentioned so far. The 1080p resolution is still expected to feature a Snapdragon 800 chipset or an Exynos 5 Octa processor along with 3 GB of RAM.
Furthermore, the third generation Galaxy Note phablet is said to come out with a 13 megapixel rear camera and will be slightly thinner than the Galaxy Note II with its profile measuring 8mm.
Unfortunately, there is no official word from Samsung just yet, but the IFA 2013 launch seems inevitable, considering the strong competition in the phablet club.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 review: Middle of everywhere

Introduction

In their third generation, the Galaxy Tab series by Samsung are finally coming to terms with playing second fiddle to the Notes. The S-Pen and the processing power are, at this point, the main dividing line between mainstream and premium, but the gap will probably widen. If you're after latest-generation chipsets and full-HD screens, the Note line of tablets is by far the safer bet.
The Galaxy Tabs on the other hand are shaping up as the sensible, value choice. And by the way, having two distinct product lines covering the midrange and the premium segment, is perhaps helping Samsung maintain a relatively strong position despite the fact that the Koreans are clearly not doing as well in the tablet space as in the smartphone realm.Close window
Now, it's not the race to the top the Galaxy Tab 3 tablets are interested in but it isn't the race to the bottom either. Those three seem to make sense in the middle - and no other than the middle sibling stands out from the rest.
The Galaxy Tab 3 lineup comes in three screen sizes - 7.0, 8.0 and 10.1 inch. It was exactly the eight-inch version that was missing in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 series. The first generation didn't have one either, there was a 7.7" AMOLED sporting slate there instead and an 8.9" LTE-enabled version.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 conveniently uses the momentum of the eight-inch Note and, just as conveniently, is giving Samsung the chance to double-mark the iPad mini. Let's start with the rundown.

Samsung has shipped 20 million Galaxy S4 units already

Despite reports (which were denied) of Samsung cutting down orders for Galaxy S4 parts, the company's flagship is selling very well – Yonhap News is reporting that the tech giant had shipped 20 million units by the end of June. The Galaxy S4 hit the 10 million mark in late May, so it appears the demand isn't slowing down at all.
Its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S III took about 100 days to get to 20 million, so the galaxy S4 is selling 1.7 times faster. This speed reportedly put the Galaxy S4 at the #1 position in shipments for Q2 this year.
Analysts have predicted that the S4 will sell 80 million units this year, beating the 60 million achievement of the Galaxy S III.
There's a souped up version of the Galaxy S4 that came out recently, the Galaxy S4 LTE-A with a Snapdragon 800 chipset and LTE-Advanced connectivity. It's available only in South Korea for now, but we wonder how it will affect sales numbers if it sees a worldwide release.

Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One with 'stock' Android now available in Play Store

htc-one-nexus-635.jpg

When it rains, it pours - that certainly seems to be case with stock Android devices. The stock Android variants of HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 are now are available in Google Play Store in the US.
Samsung had announced its Galaxy S4 smartphone in March 2013. The company is retailing the unlocked samsung galxy s4 with Nexus experience for $ $649 (approximately Rs. 39,000). The unlocked HTC One on the other hand is available in the Play Store for $599 (approximately Rs. 36,000). In contrast to the three capacitive buttons on other stock Android smartphones, the HTC One has just two buttons (Back and Home) and the HTC logo in the middle. In addition to this, on the stock version of HTC one you will have to bid goodbye to the Beats Audio software and the HTC camera app.
Both Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One with Nexus are SIM unlocked, which means they should work on GSM operators across the globe. However, as of now these smartphones are not available outside the US. It is expected that they will be available in other markets soon.
As per a news report by phandroid.com, both HTC One and Galaxy S4 are running kernels supplied by their respective device manufacturer and so they will not be getting the Android update directly from Google. The Nexus devices that Google offers - like the Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 - are the first to get Android updates directly from the Internet search giant. This bit of information might be a bummer for consumers looking forward to Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One with 'stock' Android for quick updates.

Android 4.3 spotted on Galaxy S4, screenshots inside

Leaked screenshots show Android 4.3, dubbed Jelly Bean, running on a Snapdragon-powered (I9505)Samsung Galaxy S4. The firmware was allegedly intended for the Google Edition Galaxy S4 (I9505G) and sports the build number JWR66N.S005.130625.
Just by looking at the screenshots we can't identify anything truly new, except for the camera UI, which is already present on the HTC One and Galaxy S4 Google Editions, and the fact that the release seemsto retain the Jelly Bean name, instead of going for Key Lime PieAccording to another report from WSJ, Google is feverishly working on finishing up Android 4.3 and releasing it and is planning on dropping Android Key Lime Pie (perhaps version 5.0) on the scene this fall. According to sources the next Android iteration (KLP, not JB) will be "better tailored to the lower-cost smartphones".
Reportedly Google is even developing low-cost devices on its own, without OEM branding.
And while we're talking rumors WSJ learned from unknown sources that Google is developing a smartwatch device and gaming console, both revolving around the Android platform. Seeing how much traction the OUYA console gained and that smart wristwatches are all over the news lately, we would hardly be surprised if Google wants to join the bandwagon. There's also talk of an upcoming second generation Nexus Q home entertainment device.
However there are a lot of ifs and buts, and uncertainties in the information so you should take it with a pinch of salt.
