Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for Sony Xperia ion now available

Great news, Sony Xperia ion owners. Sony is finally seeding the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean updates for the AT&T-bound Xperia ion LTE and the international Xperia ion HSPA.
The Sony Xperia ion was announced way back at CES in January 2012. It launched in June 2012 running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a promise of Ice Cream Sandwich treatment soon after the official launch. Well, the ICS did happen but it took Sony four months to release it. Then came the Jelly Bean promise.
The official Jelly Bean update was scheduled and postponed a few times, but the wait is finally over. The 4.1.2 updates are seeding right now and all the Xperia ion should get the notification soon.
As usual with this kind of updates, the rollout is gradual and it may take a few days before the Jelly Bean ROM reaches your device. You should check both the OTA service and the Sony PC Companion tool.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra goes official: a 6.4" Snapdragon 800 monster

Sony has just made its Xperia Z Ultra phablet official. Previously known by its codename Togari, the device features a 6.4" monstrous screen and a Snapdragon 800 chipset, which is the fastest ARM chip put in a smartphone to date.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra Triluminous screen has 1080p resolution, giving it a nicely sounding 344ppi pixel density. It uses Sony's OptiContrast and X-Reality tech, which it's the successor of the Mobile BRAVIA tech. Sony is boasting that the 6.4" display gives users 60% more surface to work with compared to other phones (5" phones presumably). You can use a regular pencil or pen as a stylus as well as a capacitive stylus.
There's a powerful Adreno 330 GPU to push all the pixels to the screen too, a part of the new Snapdragon 800 chipset, which also packs a quad-core Krait 400 processor clocked at 2.2GHz. That makes the Sony Xperia Z Ultra the first device to go official with the 800 chipset and it will surely be quite the benchmark champion when it comes up.
The new chipset runs Android 4.2.2 with a revamped Sony software to make good use of both the extra available power and screen real estate.

Leaked screenshots show what Sony's Android 4.2 might look like

Sony Xperia ZU a.k.a. "Togari" is the rumored 6.44" phablet coming on June 25 with a Snapdragon 800 chipset and Android 4.2.2. The new version of Android will reportedly bring a slightly tweaked Sony UI.
Here are some screenshots that are allegedly from the updated software. We tried to match them with screenshots from our Xperia Z review and aside from minor cosmetic changes the UI is mostly the same.

Sony Xperia M gets priced in the UK and Germany

The Sony Xperia M has had its price revealed in the UK and Germany.
The single SIM variant of the handset is available for preorder in Germany from Cyberport.de for €239, while the dual-SIM version is listed at notebooksbilliger.de for €299. The difference seems a bit too big so we assume the latter price is slightly off, though.

In the UK, Handtec has the single-SIM model for £227.99, but it is currently listed as out of stock. Meanwhile, Carphone Warehouse has the M pegged for an August 2013, which coincides with the Q3 launch frame given by Sony on announcement.
The Sony Xperia M was revealed last week by Sony. Besides offering dual-SIM and single-SIM models, is a midrange handset with a 4-inch display of FWVGA resolution, dual-core 1 GHz Krait processor, 4 GB of expandable storage and 1 GB of RAM. It'll run Android 4.1 out of box, and it also has a slew of connectivity features which include NFC, and a 5MP shooter with front-facer.

Sony Xperia ZU (Togari) image leaks, LOLcat in tow

The Sony Xperia ZU, codenamed Togari, has made an appearance in its first live photo. The image which purportedly displays the side of the Xperia ZU isn't of very good quality. However, that is compensated by the cute cat that stands on top of Sony's phablet.
The cat aside, the Xperia ZU looks to carry the design language of the Tablet Z and Xperia Z featuring straight edges and amazingly thin profile. Rumored to sport a 6.44-inch 1080p display, the Xperia ZU is said to be powered by the 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset and 2GB of RAM.
On top of that, chatter around the web suggests the phone will be IP58 certified and will support pencils for stylus. The Xperia ZU is expected to run on Android 4.2.2.

Sony Xperia L review: Xperia Lite

Introduction

Sony's ticking along nicely and it's almost hard to believe it's only its second season on its own. Having finally made their presence felt in the premium end, the Japanese are showing enviable focus and determination in bringing the middle ranks up to date.
The good thing is they have a solid foundation to build on and the Sony Xperia L looks ready to take advantage. It picks up exactly where the Xperia U left off and tries to fix only what needed fixing, without overspending on gimmicks. A bigger screen, beefier battery and still resolution up from 5 to 8MP are things we wouldn't say no to. Yet, the expandable memory is what seems to be the most exciting piece of news.

The Xperia L is about to enter a segment that saw some of Sony's most compelling performers last year. This is no small responsibility but the L seems to have the right tools for the job. It comes across as one of the hottest prospect in Sony's lineup - one that's more likely to pleasantly surprise than disappoint. Let's take a closer look at what the Sony Xperia L has to offer.

Sony Xperia Z to be available through a US carrier soon

At the All Things D D11 conference, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai confirmed that the Sony Xperia Z will be heading to a US carrier in the near future, although he didn't specify which carrier exactly.

The most likely candidate currently is T-Mobile, as leaked images of what is purportedly an Xperia Z with T-Mobile branding surfaced last month. The smartphone also got FCC approval with support for T-Mo's bands recently.
Of course, you can get the Xperia Z in the US even now, but you'll have to get its unlocked version directly from Sony directly for the hefty $629. So if you were looking to take advantage of lower on-contract pricing, this is great news.
Meanwhile, there's word that the Sony Xperia ZL, the Z's non-waterproof counterpart, will be heading to AT&T sometime soon.
Either way, we hope that Sony and the major US carriers make things happen sooner rather than later, as it's been almost three months since the devices became available in most other markets.

Sony Xperia UL announced in Japan

The Sony Xperia UL was revealed today by Japanese carrier KDDi. It packs the same 5-inch 1080p screen as the Xperia Z flagship, as well as its water and dust resistance.
A 1.5 GHz quad-core processor is also in the mix, as well as the Adreno 320 GPU and 2 GB of RAM, but the real star of the show will be 13 MP camera sensor, which, besides HD video recording, is capable of taking burst photos at up to 15 frames per second. The Xperia UL also comes complete with a dedicated camera button, which the Xperia Z doesn't have.
There's also a huge array of connectivity extras, such as NFC, DLNA, IR-port, as well as support for the Felica mobile wallet service in Japan. It will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Sony Xperia ZR won't launch in the UK, Germany and France

The recently announced water and dust resistant Sony Xperia ZR won't be getting the global release many were hoping for. The smartphone won't be hitting the United Kingdom, Germany and France according to new information.
The news for the French users is quite certain as it was delivered by Sony France itself. As for the UK we've only heard that the Xperia ZR won't be available from an online retailer, who claims to have spoken to Sony representatives.

Sony may have decided to repeat the Xperia ZL launch and push the Xperia ZR into selected markets only. We guess it has something to do with not avoiding additional pressure on its Xperia Z flagship.
The Sony Xperia ZR was officially unveiled yesterday. It specs similar to its bigger Xperia Z sibling but a smaller 4.55" display of 720p resolution and a thicker 10.5mm profile.

Sony Xperia ZL review: Off the bench

Introduction

Having finally scored a homerun, and a desperately needed one at that, Sony is keen to bring another hitter off the bench. And they sure hope it's the Cadillac-driving kind. The Japanese mean business - and the Xperia Z did its best to get that point across. The Xperia ZL now has plenty of momentum to build on but a certain weight of expectations too.
The double-backup is something Samsung has been doing for a couple of years now with a Galaxy S flagship in the spring followed by a Note phablet at the end of summer. Sony's going for what looks more like a one-two punch with the glass-clad, water-proof Xperia Z and the more compact, less extravagant, but just as premium Xperia ZL. The timeframe for their arrival to market has been shortened too - pretty much a must, considering that chipset is only getting older.

Sony Xperia ZL
Sony needs users to like the ZL, because the Z probably won't make it on its own. On paper, the Xperia ZL has all the trimmings of its sibling save for the IP57 certification. And it should be just as capable as most other flagships of the latest generation. Here go the specs.

Sony Xperia E review: E-lementary

Introduction

Well, this sounds like an apt title really. The Sony Xperia E is among the cheapest packages on offer from Sony, second to only the Tipo. From the design theme of the first generation of Sony smartphones, to the familiar internals, the Sony Xperia E has little to no surprises. Especially that we've actually seen its twin already.
The Sony Xperia E and Xperia E dual are nearly identical, with the number of SIM slots the only notable hardware difference. It boils down to what makes more sense to you as a user - dual-SIM support or the more recent Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean.
Sony Xperia E Sony Xperia E Sony Xperia E
Sony Xperia E official pictures
When talking entry-level smartphones, a single-SIM package usually has to try harder to make itself noticed. Dual-SIM versions are usually regarded as niche devices but they have the benefit of a clearly defined target audience. There's a lot of competition in Sony Xperia E's price bracket, and not just droids either. Yet, Jelly Bean right out of the box gives it a good enough start. Let's take a closer look at what else it has to offer:

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and -band UMTS support
  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • 3.5" 256K-color capacitive TFT touchscreen of HVGA resolution (320 x 480)
  • Android OS v4.1.1 Jelly Bean
  • 1 GHz Cortex-A5 CPU, Adreno 200 GPU, Qualcomm MSM7227A chipset
  • 512 MB of RAM
  • 2GB of user-accessible built-in storage (4GB total)
  • microSD slot (32GB supported)
  • 3.15 MP fixed-focus camera, geo-tagging
  • VGA video @ 30fps
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot
  • GPS with A-GPS
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1
  • User-accessible battery, Li-Ion 1530 mAh

Main disadvantages

  • Feeble chipset and uninspiring performance
  • Mediocre screen quality
  • Fixed-focus camera, No LED flash
  • Video recording No front-facing camera
The Sony Xperia E is yet another Qualcomm-powered 3.5-incher for Sony in the entry level market. It's got the upper hand over the likes of the Tipo and Miro (clocked at 800MHz), and probably even the Xperia J which is has the exact same 1GHz chipset but a bigger and more pixel-rich FWVGA screen. Bottom line, no record-breaking speed is to be expected here but the Xperia E will most likely get the job done for first-time smartphone users.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support; 3G with HSPA; LTE
  • 5" 16M-color 1080p capacitive touchscreen of 441ppi, Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2
  • Android OS v4.1.1 Jelly Bean with custom UI
  • Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait CPU, 2 GB of RAM, Adreno 320 GPU; Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset
  • 13 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and geotagging, HDR
  • 1080p video recording @ 30fps with HDR mode, continuous autofocus and stereo sound
  • 2 MP front camera, 1080p video recording
  • Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct and DLNA; Wireless TV out
  • GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS
  • 16GB of built-in storage; microSD card slot
  • MHL-enabled microUSB port
  • Bluetooth v4.0
  • NFC
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic
  • Shorter footprint than most 5” smartphones

Main disadvantage

  • Non user-replaceable battery
  • Uninspiring camera performance
  • Notably thicker than Xperia Z
  • Dubious back panel build quality and aesthetics
If you're after a FullHD five-incher the Xperia ZL is the most compact handset that fits the bill. The difference, of course, is by no means huge but having a smaller footprint than the Samsung Galaxy S4 is a great achievement. On the other hand, a 10 mm thick body is nothing to brag about. Yet, if that's the price for getting a proper shutter key and an Infrared port, it should be fine for most people.
Anyway, Sony opted for two distinct versions of a 2013 flagship and then had to sit down and think about how to make them... distinct. Having a more compact option of what's virtually the same package as the flagship makes every bit of sense. But is it worth the extra millimeters around the waistline?
It was probably important to Sony to send a clear message that what's on offer is essentially the same package - the difference boils down to size, choice of finish and waterproofing or not. A sensible plastic case doesn't look half as good as glass but has its advantages. Water resistance is a great asset but not everyone needs it. Plus... a proper shutter key, half press and all, is something we always welcome in a cameraphone.

Sony Xperia ZL at HQ
But will Sony's two-flagship strategy pay off? Can the Xperia ZL coexist with its better-looking, and ultimately more prominent, sibling or is it better off as a regional option? What kind of users do these two have in mind? It's the kind of questions we'll be trying to answer, while we explore the Sony Xperia ZL. Let's get going.

Sony Xperia L hands-on: First look

The Sony Xperia L has a precision engineered feature mix, making it a true successor to last year's Xperia U. It covers all bases, compromising only on stuff that isn't essential to the user experience, while at the same time, retaining the attractive price tag. The ambience light and the capable camera are here to add some character to the smartphone - something very rare at this price point.
Sony may have had a hard time competing in the high-end market segment for the past two years, but its entry-level and mid-range smartphones were among the most attractive offerings on the market. The Xperia U and Xperia P duo last year, and the Xperia mini before that, provided better value for money than virtually every other smartphone in this class, so naturally we are paying close attention to Sony's newly announced smartphone in the segment - the Xperia L.

Analysts estimate Sony sold 4.6 million Xperia Z phones in 40 days

The Sony Xperia Z got the jump on other 1080p flagships and it’s paying off handsomely. The water-resistant phone was announced and went on sale before its chief competition and analysts are estimating Sony has sold 4.6 million units sold in 40 days.
The HTC One experienced delays and its launched got pushed back, while the LG Optimus G Pro launched this month and the Samsung Galaxy S4 launch is coming in a couple of weeks. That left the Xperia Z with very little competition on the 1080p / quad-core front.
The HTC Butterfly was the first 1080p phone to hit the market, but it didn’t get a wide launch or a lot of love from HTC before the One was announced.
Well, we’ll have to wait until the Q1 report is out to get concrete numbers from Sony.

xperia z

With a cutting-edge camera, a super-slim design and the ability to withstand life's knocks and bumps (and Android Jelly Bean to boot) the Xperia Z is a phone that's got us fired up about Sony Mobile again.
Earlier handsets such as the Sony Xperia S and Sony Xperia T were extremely promising from a brand striking out on its own - but it's with the Xperia Z that Sony is really banking on making a cataclysmic dent in the makeup of the smartphone market.
If you don't believe us, just look at its marketing hype - Valentine's Day saw ads on several, consecutive pages of major newspapers in the UK and you can't pass a billboard without seeing it in glorious Technicolor, accompanied by a strong statement that Sony has "reinvented the phone."
The Android Jelly Bean-toting (albeit only 4.1) Sony Xperia Z comes with some of the best specs on the market - and it's one of the most eagerly awaited handsets of recent months. Launching before the HTC One orSamsung Galaxy S4, Sony is clearly hoping to steal an early march on its competitors.
And the early signs it will do so are promising: a quad-core 1.5GHz Snaprdragon Krait processor, 13MP camera, 16GB storage (expandable, woohoo!), 2GB RAM, water and dust-resistant, 1080p HD screen with Bravia Engine, LTE, to name a few. You couldn't make this stuff up - this is the company that had a part in the Satio, after all.

As soon as we took our review unit out of the box, we were mesmerised. This feels and looks like a premium, high quality product. Sony is one of the few manufacturers that can take what is, effectively, a plain black square and make it into something beautiful. Manufactured from piano black, high gloss glass both front and black, it could have come from the same stable as the Google Nexus 4.
Though maybe we are overestimating it, viewing the Sony Xperia Z through geek-tinted goggles - because while we were blown away, others came out with the line that Sony will be hoping doesn't cross too many punters' lips: "looks like every other smartphone out there though, doesn't it?"
